CHAPTER XXIV
Spurlock's novel was a tale of regeneration. "
"Well!" remarked Jonathan, who had paid little attention to the latter part of the
conversation: "this is an awkward business certainly: but we must do the best we
can in it. "
"Are you a nurse?"
"Yes. He turned his back on that temptation. Here he was preparing to leap over
the hedge into the fields on the left, when he was intercepted by two horsemen,
who, hearing the shouts, rode up and struck at him with the butt-ends of their
heavy riding-whips. He
squatted and threw his arm around the backs of her
knees. "I am—I am!" cried the widow, snatching the babe, and pressing it to her breast
with rapturous delight "God be thanked, I have found it!"
"We have both good reason to be grateful," added the lady, with great emotion. It was the moment for smiles. A conviction that her sister’s words were true had from the
first possessed her. They did not want her. "I suppose he'll be on his feet any day now. She turned out the electric light and gained the hall. "
"Silly love stories?"
"No; love wasn't the theme. I am going to ask him to finish it. I have broken from prison,
and am come to save you.
